While the British take a hierarchical view on most aspects of life they still see themselves as egalitarians. This means they have a good understanding of the more egalitarian cultures - even if they do not always agree with the egalitarian informal ways of doing business.
What the British See as 'Grey Zones' or Problem AreasCompared to the British hierarchical organisations most egalitarian companies are too loosely organised for British comfort. The flatter the organisation and communication structure the bigger the differences from the British model. To the British this type of organisation has a lack of order and transparency that makes them difficult to deal with.
Another important aspect of the British management style is the preference for assertive personalities and strong managers.
Most egalitarian organisations have focus on fostering leaders who can give direction to individually empowered employees working with the organisation. This type of leadership is seen by many British as inefficient. The British doctrine about managers giving orders and not suggestions is still very much in place.
