The Dimension of Time

The cultural difference in this dimension explores whether a culture focuses mainly on the past, the present, or the future.

Cultures that focus on the past look to tradition and value precedence when making decisions. These cultures are often class oriented and hierarchical by nature; its people like stability and strive to keep the status quo. These cultures often prefer formal and polite communication styles.

Cultures that focus on the present make decisions based on their current situation. They are typically social cultures where living in the now is important, and where developing and maintaining personal relationships are paramount for business. The culture often prefers an inclusive communication style and its people are social and extrovert.

The last group of cultures are the future oriented cultures. These cultures base their decisions on their expectations to the future and do not pay overly attention to events that happened in the past. These cultures are often quite egalitarian and informal in their communication style.
