Make an effort to learn UK English – yes, even if you speak American, Australian, or International English. Start with listening in on conversations to get a feel for the rhythm and the local lingo.
Do lots of research. Then do some more. Find out everything you can about your new life in the UK. Culture Class is a great start, but some information you will have to find on your own.
Make a habit out of trying something new every day. It could be something simple like taking a new way to work or trying new food.
Try living like the British! Go to the pub to watch a game of football or take part in a pub quiz (You should not plan on bringing kids as they most likely would not be welcome in the pub).
Make an effort of making you new house as homely as possible. It is better to bring too much that too little (especially if you have children). Put up photos, flowers, personal touches, bring books and movies etc.
Fully immerse yourself in the British Culture! The sooner you get the hang of the locals the sooner you will be accepted and the sooner you will feel settled!
Do not get frustrated when things in the UK do not work as you expected they would. Things working differently does not mean they do not work, it simply means that they work differently.
Accept the fact that you can develop culture shock and have homesick days. It is natural and all expats get them. Use the “Five Questions”, Action and Dream Plans to avoid getting stuck in a rut (Prepare section).
Do things in your own time. When integrating into your new life in the UK remember that making new friends can take a while. Don’t wait too long to get out there though!
Do not forget to contact friends and family back home. If you can, create a blog with video or images so people better can relate to your new situation.
Do not isolate yourself in the UK and don’t stop doing what you liked doing before you moved. Continue your sports and hobbies or take up new ones as soon as you can spare the time.
Stay Curious! Get out there and explore. Visit the Lake and Peak districts to the North, the beaches at Lands End, and don’t cheat yourself out of visits to Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland.
Stay positive! You decided to relocate because you wanted to try out a new culture and pursue new opportunities. It will all come to happen if you work for it. Hang in there if times get tough.
