Moving With Kids?

Relocating is often as challenging as it is exciting, and it is as hard for children as it is for adults.  Like you, your children will be leaving behind friends and familiar places. They will be starting over and have to build new friendships, adjusting to a new town, a new country, and a new school.

To help our youngest users, Culture Class will in November 2008 publish the new product Culture Class Kids and later in the year Culture Class Teens.  Until then, please use this short list to find some inspiration for how you can help you children settle in the UK.

Preparing For The Move

Help your children say goodbye to friends and family and give them something positive to remember. Make sure that they feel they can easily stay in touch with the friends that stay behind.

  1. Help your children make a scrapbook with photos of you old house and pictures of friends and family.
  2. Help your children prepare a list of phone numbers, emails, addresses, and online call signs for their closest friends and relatives.  You can also provide their old school class with pre-addressed postcards to help them stay in touch.
  3. Research and plan for activities in which your child can participate after your relocation.  This can either be sports or hobbies they already like doing, or it can be something new.  Since you are moving to the UK what about trying out football, cricket, or rowing? It is a good idea to sign up for more than one activity in case the first one falls through or doesn't go well.
