Speak the Lingo

Make an effort to learn UK English – yes, even if you speak American, Australian, or International English.  Start with listening in on conversations to get a feel for the rhythm and the local lingo.

One of the biggest barriers for many expats moving to the UK is the worry of language barriers causing problems. If you are moving from a non-English speaking country then it may be worthwhile taking some English language classes before you move.

If you have not had the chance to do so, do not panic!  English people rarely speak more than one language (English) and the chances are that they really appreciate you are taking on a second language to be able to communicate with them.

Another positive reason for not being scared about language barriers or not speaking native English is that the British are used to people who have strong dialects and accents. As long as they can understand you they will be happy to have a talk.

A few months after you have made the move to the UK, it is very likely that you will start using words like “Mate” (friend), “Ta” (Thanks) and “Cheers” (also thanks).
