Independent Schools & Colleges

Independent schools and International Schools each have their own way of organising education for their pupils and do not necessarily follow the same pattern as state schools.

The following gives an indication of what to expect but it is particularly important to read each schools prospectus carefully.

School ChildrenSometimes it is assumed an independent school will provide a better education than a state school. This is not automatically the case. Many state schools match or exceed the achievements of some independent schools.

  • Independent schools are not funded through the state and parents need to pay fees.
  • Mostly run by Charitable Trusts with a board of Governors responsible for the development and school policy.
  • The Head Teacher is responsible for the every day running of the school
  • Most schools have smaller classes and therefore are able to give more personal attention.
  • Your child will receive a rounded education having great emphasis on developing other talents like sports, music or drama.
  • Independent schools are not obliged to follow the National Curriculum but many will do so and supplement it with additional areas of study and options.
  • Have a wide variety of choice i.e. city schools, rural schools, boarding schools, single-sex schools as well as schools with specific religious affiliations. Some schools are highly selective and accept only very able pupils.
  • The average cost per annum in South East London is approximately £5000.00 for Juniors and £7000.00 for Seniors (11-18 years)
