School Registration

In order to register with a State School you need to have a permanent address in England. Evidence of a house purchase (exchange of contracts) or a rental agreement for a period of 6 or 12 months may be sufficient to prove a permanent residential address in advance of occupation.

Please note that parents can express a preference for a state school, or several schools in order of preference, but do not have the right to choose a school and expect a place to be provided automatically. Obviously a vacant place has to be available to apply for.

The nearest state school with an available place will be allocated to you. Every address has an allocated school although the allocated school can change each year. If this school is full they have to allocate the next (with a place available) nearest to where you are living to minimize the travelling distance.

If you do not want your child to go to the allocated school you have the right to apply to another school. This school is not obliged to give a space to your child but normally will if places are available.

An appeal process is available if decisions go against parents wishes. An educational consultant can assist with this type of complication. It may be possible to go on a waiting list for a first choice school while the child attends another school temporarily.
