The Right to School

Parents living in the UK have the right to choose the type of education they prefer for their children. Over 90% have their children educated in the State System whilst the balance chooses independent fee paying schools.

Any family moving into the UK and having a visa for a minimum of at least six months is entitled to a place in a state school, free of charge, for any child in the family who is of statutory school age.

School Terms

Children born between 1st September in one year and 31st August the following year will be in the same year group at school.

The statutory age for starting school is the beginning of the school term following the child's fifth birthday. Pupils may leave school at the age of 16. In these 11 years they will pass through the 4 Key Stages, during which time your child's progress will be measured in subjects such as Mathematics, English and Science. The Key Stages are like the rungs of a ladder: Children move through the levels, year by year.

The Academic Year

The academic year is split into three terms,

  • Autumn Term from September to December
  • Spring Term from January to April
  • Summer Term from May to July
