If you are invited to someone's home for dinner or drinks, it is customary to bring the hostess a gift of flowers or a box of chocolates. As most of the Brits like a glass or wine or two you can also bring a bottle of wine.
You should strive to be punctual in your arrival, or at least no more than about 10-15 minutes off the time of the invitation. If you arrive to early there is a fair chance that the host will not be ready for you, and if you arrive too late there is a good chance that the food is overcooked.
If you are unsure about how to dress, ask the host or hostess in advance. If you are uncomfortable doing this, it is better to err on the side of being formal.
When invited for dinner it is seen as polite to bring a small gift such as flowers or a bottle of wine. It is not commen to bring food.
Smoking in other people’s houses is less accepted in the UK than it is in many other parts of the world. In someone's home, you should always ask before lighting up. Better still, you should wait until the host asks you if you are a smoker and then follow their directions.
