The history of the miles, yards, inches, and ounces goes back to the time before the Roman Empire, and the general feeling in England is that just because the EU thinks it would be smart to use the same measures across Europe, they are not going to change their system.
The current Imperial System for weight and measures was introduced in the United Kingdom and its colonies, including Commonwealth countries in 1824. Funnily enough most of these countries have since then become officially metric, but that has not stopped the UK from continuing to use mainly the Imperial system.
You can read more about the Imperial System on the next few pages, or you can take the easy way out and use the universal converter on this page.
