20th and 21st Centuries

The Great War

In 1914 The Great War I not only changed the map of Europe forever, it also brought around great change in the UK.

Before the war the British society and Empire was probably the greatest power in the world, after the war all had changed. Although the Allied were victorious UK suffered a million deaths and lost 15% of its wealth.

The Anglo-Irish War

An Irish demand for independence culminated in the Anglo-Irish War where Ireland won a concession and became an independent nation in 1922.

The northern 1/6 of Ireland where the people predominantly were protestant remained a part of the U.K. and was separated from the Republic of Ireland. In 1927 the name of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was changed to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The Second World War

The British joined the Second World War in 1939 when Hitler invaded Poland. The English won their freedom partly through heroic battles above the French Canal and in1940 they managed to beat off Hitler's planned invasion despite the massive bombing attacks in 1940.

In 1941 the Americans joined the war and the Allies prevailed. By the end of the war, however, the European economy was in ruins and the continent was divided between the Communist Eastern Europe and democratic Western Europe.
